Riesling is a major white wine grape variety, especially popular in Germany and neighbouring regions such as Alsace. Riesling is also increasingly popular in New World areas including Australia and California.
Most often used for sweeter wines, Riesling retains acidity with a high sugar value, which provides balance in the sweet wines that Germany is perhaps most well known for.
Riesling has also been put to use in the New World to produce high-alcohol wines of a steely, very dry character.
